Purpose

Heritage Ohio was developed as a statewide, not-for-profit organization dedicated to encouraging and assisting people and organizations to protect and preserve our heritage. Historic preservation and downtown revitalization are vitally important in the movements to protect the buildings, landscapes, art, artifacts and landmarks we have inherited.

Historic preservation and downtown revitalization enrich our quality of life, enhance our neighborhoods and revitalize communities as better places in which to live, work, celebrate and visit!

Heritage Ohio is the Statewide Main Street Coordinating Progarm in Ohio, as designated by the National Main Street Center.

Statewide Main Street coordinating programs assist cities and towns within the state with downtown and neighborhood business district revitalization. Statewide Main Street programs support local Main Street efforts through the following general ways:

  • by creating economic development tools and resources according to the state’s specific economic conditions;

  • by competitively selecting local Main Street districts and programs to participate in the state network;
  • by providing an appropriate scope of technical assistance to participating local Main Street programs;
  • in very few cases, by providing financial assistance to local Main Street organizations;
  • by providing networking, advocacy, and encouragement to participating local Main Street programs;
  • by serving as a liaison with the National Trust Main Street Center; and

  • by identifying  local programs that annually meet the standards of National Main Street Accreditation.

NPHT
Heritage Ohio is the statewide partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Ohio. It is the only organization in Ohio with this designation. The National Trust views statewide preservation organizations as critical components to the future of historic preservation. Its goal is to have staffed effective statewide not-for-profits in each state. The Trust seeks to strengthen statewide organizational capacity to make preservation relevant to all Americans in the rapidly changing years ahead.

One of the Statewide Partners Program's most successful features is a matching grant the National Trust provides to help statewide organizations hire their first full-time, professional staff. The program also offers organizational development assistance from the National Trust's six regional offices and specialized workshops and training.
