Hoping to improve attendance at the City of Delaware’s holiday events, Main Street Delaware created a three-day holiday weekend extravaganza in December 2017.
With the main road closed to vehicles, choirs and carolers performed on a decorated stage across from a 40-foot tree decorated with lights, ribbons, and brand-new ornaments created by downtown businesses. A huge crowd of 15,000 cheered the tree lighting. Free ice skating, Dash for Dasher scavenger hunt, and a Christmas parade were attended by 3-times more people than in previous years. Main Street is about using promotional events for economic prosperity. One local merchant reported that their 2017 December sales were up 75% over December 2016!
The award was presented to Main Street Delaware.
